Amsterdam, The Netherlands – Electric small vehicle manufacturer the Tuk Tuk Factory has signed a licensing agreement with e-Tuk USA LLC to make the company the exclusive distributor of e-Tuk electric vehicles in the United States.
Similar to the moped-engine-powered tuk-tuks that cover the streets of Thailand and India, e-Tuks have been growing in popularity in Europe in recent years.
“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to introduce these quality electric, zero-emission vehicles to the U.S. market,” says Michael Fox of e-Tuk USA. “When my partners and I first discovered the tuk tuks in a small town in Guatemala we casually discussed the idea of bringing the tuk tuk taxis to our hometown of Denver, Colo. Little did we know at the time that a small idea would lead us to the Tuk Tuk Factory in Amsterdam.”
The first three e-Tuks arrived in Denver last month. e-Tuk USA is in the process of having the e-Tuk's U.S. Department of Transportation certified to be driven on U.S. streets. The vehicles are already type approved in Europe, and there are just a few more steps to be completed before distribution and usage can officially begin in the U.S.
The initial interest for the e-Tuk's in the U.S. is already greater than expected. Initial leads have included concepts such as taxi and tour companies, delivery food service, small food cart businesses, hotels, and public relations and marketing firms. Both companies hope to sell at least 500 units in the next few years.
